Principle of operation of the catalytic converter (catalyst)

The petrol MAZDA 323 models can be equipped with the adjustable or unregulated catalyst. The adjustable catalyst demands existence of an adjustable smeseobrazovatel.

The adjustable smeseobrazovatel is understood as the carburetor or system of injection at which the fuel relation to air can constantly change depending on an operating mode and from the content of oxygen in the fulfilled gases. With the former carburetor it is impossible as it has no corresponding monitor. Therefore the adjustable carburetor, or system of injection of fuel is used or electronically.

The smeseobrazovatel receives signals of management from a lambda probe which is in a forward part of system and is blown by a stream of exhaust gases. The lambda probe is an electric sensor which displays the residual content of oxygen in exhaust gases in the form of electric fluctuations and allows to draw a conclusion on composition of fuel-air mix. In fractions of a second the lambda probe can give the corresponding signal on an element of management of a smeseobrazovatel thanks to what the optimum relation of fuel and air can be maintained. It on the one hand is necessary as operating modes constantly change (idling, full gas), on the other hand, because reburning in the catalyst can happen only if in exhaust gases there is a sufficient part of gasoline. Thus that in the catalyst at a temperature of +300 ° — +800 °C in general there could be a reburning, it is necessary that fuel-air mix had more fuel than at pure combustion.

The three-functional catalyst is everywhere used. It means that at such catalyst on a basis the lambda of adjustment is at the same time carried out oxidation of carbon monoxide (SO) and hydrocarbon (NANOSECOND), and also decrease in an oxide of nitrogen (N0x)
